Dua Text

Transliteration

Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim.

Meaning

O Allah! You are Eternal, without beginning. You are the One who removes illnesses and who endures through Your eternity. O You whose goodness is abundant, O You whose kindness is everlasting! Treat us with Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

What Is Asked in This Dua

In this dua, the servant remembers Allah as Eternal and without beginning (qadim and azali); that is, they declare that He is the one and only Being who has no beginning and whose existence is from Himself. They affirm that it is Allah who removes illnesses and who endures through His eternity. In this way, one is reminded that health and illness are in Allah’s hands, and that both states come by His decree.

Then Allah is called upon with the attributes “whose goodness is abundant” and “whose kindness is everlasting.” Trusting in Allah’s unending goodness and continuous generosity, the servant asks to be treated with mercy. The address at the end of the dua, “O Most Merciful of the merciful,” is a plea that looks to Allah’s infinite mercy for the continuation of health and well-being. The dua serves as a protective refuge before any illness has come.
