Sleep and Night Duas

13 entries

Sleep and night duas are the duas recited when lying down in bed, before sleeping, when waking up at night and after a bad dream. In this section, the duas and tasbih recited when going to bed, the istighfar before sleeping, the dua recited when frightened in sleep, the dua recited against fear at night and what to do after a bad dream are gathered on separate pages.

The night is a time especially recommended for dua. The dhikr and istighfar made before falling asleep serve as a reckoning that closes the day, while the duas recited on waking at night are meant to benefit from the blessing of that hour.

On each page, the Arabic text of the dua with full vowel marks, its transliteration, its meaning and its source are given.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which duas are recited before going to sleep?

The common practice is Ayat al-Kursi, Surah al-Ikhlas together with Surah al-Falaq and Surah an-Nas, Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah and Allahu akbar thirty-three times each, and the dua “Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya”. In this section each of them is given on a separate page with its transliteration and meaning.

What should you do after a bad dream?

The narrations recommend that someone who has a bad dream blow lightly to their left three times, seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan and not tell anyone about the dream. The dua and words of seeking refuge recited on this occasion are on the relevant page in this section.

Is there a dua to recite when waking up at night?

Yes. The words of tawhid and praise recited on waking at night and the dua of seeking refuge recited on waking up in fear are narrated separately in the sources; both are given in this section with their Arabic text, transliteration and meaning.
