Meat estimate
Bone-in meat is estimated at about 55% of live weight for cattle and 47% for sheep and goats; it varies with breed and feeding. Partners divide the meat by weight, not by eye.
Conditions for shared qurbani
- Up to seven people may share a cow or camel; a sheep or goat is sacrificed for one person only.
- Each partner's share must be at least one seventh; one person may take more than one share. If any partner's share is less than one seventh, no one's sacrifice is valid.
- All partners must take part with the intention of worship: qurbani, a vow (nadhr) or aqiqah. You cannot join a share just to get meat.
- Minimum age: sheep and goats must be one full year old, cattle two, camels five. A sheep that is six months old but looks as sturdy as a one-year-old may also be sacrificed.
Who should sacrifice, and when?
- According to the Hanafi school, qurbani is wajib for every sane, adult, resident (not travelling) Muslim who owns wealth at the nisab level beyond their basic needs.
- Slaughter begins on the first day of Eid after the Eid prayer and continues until sunset on the third day. The first day is the most virtuous.
- It is recommended (mustahab) to keep a third of the meat for your home, give a third to relatives and neighbors, and a third to those in need.
- Sacrifice by proxy (through Diyanet or charitable foundations) is also permissible.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many people can share one large qurbani animal?
Up to seven people can share a bovine animal (calf, cow, water buffalo) or a camel. A sheep or goat, however, is sacrificed on behalf of one person only. There can also be fewer than seven partners; in that case each partner’s share is larger.
How is a qurbani share calculated?
Costs such as slaughtering, transport and care are added to the price of the animal, and the total is divided by the number of partners (shares). For example, if a 70,000 TL calf and 3,500 TL in costs are divided into seven shares, one share comes to 10,500 TL.
How much meat do you get from one qurbani share?
For cattle, the bone-in meat (carcass) is roughly 55 percent of the live weight. A calf with a live weight of 500 kg yields about 275 kg of bone-in meat; with seven shares, each share gets about 39 kg. The ratio varies with the breed and how well the animal has been fed.
Do qurbani shares have to be equal?
Each partner’s share must be at least one seventh. One person may take more than one share, but if any partner’s share is less than one seventh, no partner’s sacrifice is valid. The meat is divided among the partners by weight according to their shares.
When is the qurbani slaughtered?
Slaughtering begins on the first day of Eid al-Adha after the Eid prayer and may continue until sunset on the third day of Eid. The most virtuous is the first day.
