Friday Sermons

6 entries

The Friday khutbah (sermon) is the text the preacher (khatib) delivers from the minbar before the Friday prayer, and it is one of the conditions of the prayer; the Friday prayer is not held without the khutbah. In Turkey, the khutbah read in mosques is prepared every week by the Diyanet (Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs) and published on Thursday.

On this page, that week’s khutbah takes its place on the site automatically on the day it is published; the khutbahs of past weeks remain in the archive. The full text, topic and date of each khutbah are given together.

It is prepared for those who could not hear the khutbah in the mosque, missed it, or want to read the text later. The texts belong to the Diyanet (Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs); they are published here with their source credited.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this week’s Friday khutbah?

The khutbah at the very top of this page is the one for this week. The Diyanet (Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs) usually publishes the khutbah on Thursday, and the khutbah on the site updates automatically on the same day; it is ready here by Friday morning.

Is listening to the Friday khutbah obligatory?

Delivering the khutbah is one of the conditions of the Friday prayer; for the congregation, listening to the khutbah is sunnah, while keeping silent and listening during the khutbah is wajib. The narrations state that while the khutbah is being delivered one should not talk, pray or return greetings.

I missed the khutbah. Is my Friday prayer valid?

Someone who misses part or all of the khutbah but arrives and joins the congregation before the imam begins the prayer has a valid Friday prayer. Listening to the khutbah carries its own reward; enabling those who missed it to read the text later is the reason this page was created.
