What Is Asked in This Dua

This dua is a short but intense plea to Allah for a mother in labour. After the Basmala, Allah is called upon with three invocations: the One who creates a life from a life, the One who delivers a life from a life, and the One who brings a life out of a life. These three phrases describe the whole of childbirth as Allah’s own doing; the baby’s creation inside the mother’s body, its separation from her and its coming into the world are all in His hands.

The request is summed up in two phrases: bring her through safely and make it easy for her. In other words, it asks that both mother and baby come through safe and sound, and that the birth pass with ease rather than hardship. The person reciting this dua does not see childbirth as merely a medical process; remembering that it is Allah who brings a life out of a life, they ask Him for help. The source book states that this dua has been tried and tested and that firm belief is a condition.
