Dua for Sleep

Uyku İçin Okunacak Dua Okunuşu, Anlamı ve Fazileti

Explanation

This dua is recited by those who cannot fall asleep. The source book states that Rabia Hatun recited it constantly.

Dua Text

Transliteration

Allahumma gharatin-nujumu wa hada’atil-‘uyun, anta Hayyun Qayyumun la ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm, ya Hayyu ya Qayyumu ahdi layli wa anim ‘ayni.

Meaning

O Allah! The stars have set and the eyes have come to rest. You are the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all; neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes You. O Ever-Living, O Sustainer of all, O Allah! Make my night a good one and grant sleep to my eyes.

What Is Asked in This Dua

The dua begins by describing the stillness of the night: the stars have set, the eyes have come to rest. The servant indirectly expresses that while everyone else sleeps, he cannot, and he connects this state to Allah being the Ever-Living and the Sustainer of all, whom neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes, using words taken from Ayat al-Kursi in Surah al-Baqarah. In other words, while creation rests, he remembers that Allah is at every moment ever-living and the One who sustains all things.

The request is summed up in two sentences: that the night be made good and that sleep be granted to the eyes. The servant sees sleep, too, as a blessing and asks for it from his Lord, who Himself never sleeps. The subtlety of this dua is that a sleepless person voices his helplessness not by complaining but by remembering the attributes of Allah.

When and How to Recite

It is a dua recited in bed by those who cannot fall asleep. The source book states that Rabia Hatun recited this dua constantly and that reciting it is especially beneficial for those who cannot sleep and for children who cannot fall asleep; no specific number of recitations is mentioned.

It can be recited at night when going to bed, when sleep will not come, or in a calm voice beside a child who cannot fall asleep, while reflecting on its meaning.
