What Is Asked in This Dua
In this dua, recited while rinsing the mouth during wudu, the servant asks Allah for help in three things: reciting His remembrance, giving thanks to Him and worshipping Him well. The mouth is the organ through which all three take place; dhikr is made with the tongue, thanks are spoken with the tongue, and the recited parts of worship are performed with the tongue. While cleansing his mouth with water, the servant asks that from now on it be occupied with good words.
It is notable that the dua is phrased as “help me.” The servant admits that he cannot achieve dhikr, gratitude and beautiful worship by his own strength, and asks for Allah’s support in them. The source emphasizes that the mouth is the path of the Quran and that dhikr and gratitude should come from the mouth. In this way, rinsing the mouth is no longer merely a physical cleansing; it becomes a promise that the mouth will be kept away from idle talk, backbiting and lies, and devoted to the Quran, dhikr and gratitude.
When and How to Recite
It is recited while rinsing the mouth (madmadah) during wudu. It can be repeated at every wudu; the source mentions no specific number of recitations. Since it is recited during wudu, it is already part of the etiquette of wudu. It is fitting to say it while taking water into the mouth or right after spitting it out, reflecting on its meaning. Since it is short, it is easy to memorize; those who find the Arabic difficult can also make the dua with its meaning in their own language, saying “O Allah, help me in Your remembrance, in thanking You and in worshipping You well.”
Virtue
