What Is Asked in This Dua
In this short dua, recited when using a miswak, the servant asks Allah for two things: that the scent of his mouth be purified and that his sins be wiped away. The first request relates directly to what is being done at that moment; while the teeth are being cleaned, he asks that the mouth also be fresh and clean. The second request links physical cleanliness to spiritual purification: while cleaning his mouth, the servant also wants to be cleansed of his sins.
Placing these two requests side by side shows that in Islam cleanliness is not limited to outward appearance. The mouth is the organ of both speaking and eating; the words that come out of it and the morsels that go into it can be a means of sin or of reward. The source states that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ strongly recommended the miswak to his community, and that when no miswak is available, the teeth should be cleaned with a brush or a finger. In this way, the dua combines a daily habit like brushing the teeth with the intention of repentance and purification.
When and How to Recite
It is recited when using a miswak or toothbrush, as you begin cleaning your teeth. Since the source states that the teeth should be cleaned with a brush or a finger when no miswak is available, the dua can be recited in these cases as well. It is especially fitting to remember it when cleaning the teeth before wudu and while preparing for prayer. The source mentions no specific number of recitations; reciting it once is enough. Wudu is not required. Since it is short, it is easy to memorize; one can also make the dua with its meaning in one’s own language.
Virtue
