Dua for Memorizing the Quran (Hifz Dua)

Kur’an Ezberlemek İçin Okunacak Dua (Hıfz Duası)

Explanation

This is the dua recited by those who are about to begin memorizing the Quran (future hafiz). It is short and concise.

Dua Text

آمَنْتُ بِاللّٰهِ الْوَاحِدِ الْحَقِّ الْمُبِينِ، وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَكَفَرْتُ بِمَا سِوَاهُ

Transliteration

Amantu billahil-Wahidil-Haqqil-Mubin, wahdahu la sharika lah, wa kafartu bima siwah.

Meaning

I believe in Allah, the One, the Truth, the Manifest. He is One and has no partner. I reject everything besides Him.

What Is Asked in This Dua

This short dua is more a declaration of faith than a request. The servant says that he believes in Allah, the One, the Truth, the Manifest. He mentions Allah by the name al-Wahid: He is One. By the name al-Haqq: His existence and His word are true. By the name al-Mubin: He is manifest; His existence and His Book are a clear proof. He affirms that Allah has no partner.

Then the servant says that he rejects everything other than Allah, that is, he denies everything that is worshipped, relied upon or taken as truth besides Allah. Beginning Quran memorization with such a declaration of tawhid reminds him whose word the Book he will memorize is, and that hifz is done for Allah alone. The source book states that this dua is recommended for those about to begin memorizing the Quran and that it appears in reliable hadith collections.

When and How to Recite

This dua is recited when starting to memorize the Quran, that is, when beginning hifz. The source book recommends reciting it three times before starting to memorize and then beginning the hifz. Besides future hafiz students, it is suitable for anyone memorizing surahs and verses.

It is preferable to be in a state of wudu, to face the qibla and to recite it while reflecting on its meaning. Being short and concise, it is easy to memorize; those who find the Arabic difficult can also make their intention with its meaning in their own language. Reciting it at the start of every memorization session means opening the hifz with a declaration of faith in Allah.

Virtue

It is recommended to recite it three times when starting to memorize the Quran and then to begin the memorization (hifz). It is stated that it appears in reliable hadith collections such as those of Ibn Majah, Bayhaqi and Tirmidhi.
