Dua for Appreciating Allah’s Blessings

Nimetin Kadrini Bilme Duası: Arapçası ve Anlamı

Explanation

This is a dua for appreciating blessings and seeking refuge in Allah from losing them.

In this dua, narrated from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, one seeks refuge in Allah from four things: “zawal an-ni’mah” (the loss of a blessing), “tahawwul al-‘afiyah” (the deterioration of health and well-being), “fuja’at an-niqmah” (punishment coming suddenly) and “jami’ as-sakhat” (every kind of Allah’s displeasure). The dua teaches us to know the worth of the blessings we have before we lose them. People often realize the value of health, peace and livelihood only once they are gone; this dua is the way to give thanks without waiting for that moment.

Dua Text

Transliteration

Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min zawali ni’matika wa tahawwuli ‘afiyatika wa fuja’ati niqmatika wa jami’i sakhatika.

Meaning

O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the loss of Your blessing. I seek refuge in You from the change of the health and well-being You have granted. I seek refuge in You from Your punishment and wrath overtaking me suddenly.

What Is Asked in This Dua

It asks that the blessings one has are not lost, that health and well-being do not change, and for protection from punishment and wrath that may come suddenly. The dua does not ask for anything new; it asks for what already exists to continue.

When and How to Recite

It has no set time, and the source does not give a number either. Reciting it while your health, peace and livelihood are in good order fits the meaning of the dua best.

The source book states that a person has free will, but however much effort is made, it is possible to fall into error; that is why there is benefit in pleading and imploring.

It is commonly recited among the morning and evening adhkar. Reciting it right after receiving a blessing (a job, a home, a child, good health) is a way of attributing the blessing to Allah and being protected from pride. The source states that a person may fall into error despite their efforts, and that pleading is therefore necessary.

Virtue

The source book states that a person has free will, but however much effort one makes, it is still possible to fall into error; for this reason there is benefit in pleading and imploring.
