Dua Text
Transliteration
Allahumma inni as’aluka bi-haqqi Muhammadin wa ali Muhammad, subhanaka Allahumma wa bi-hamdika ‘amiltu su’an wa zalamtu nafsi, faghfir li fa-innahu la yaghfiru adh-dhunuba illa Ant, fa-tub ‘alayya innaka Anta at-Tawwabu ar-Rahim.
Meaning
O Allah! I ask You by the right of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad. I declare You free of every imperfection and remember You with Your praise. Truly, I have done wrong and wronged myself. So forgive me; for there is none who forgives sins but You. Accept my repentance; You are the One who accepts repentance again and again, the Merciful.
What Is Asked in This Dua
In this dua, the servant begins by presenting the request for the sake of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his family. Then he declares Allah free of every imperfection and remembers Him with praise; in other words, before asking for forgiveness, he calls to mind the greatness of Allah and his own place before Him.
Next, the servant openly confesses: “I have done wrong and wronged myself.” Admitting a sin without hiding it and without making excuses is the first step of repentance. After this confession he asks for forgiveness and declares that no one but Allah can forgive sins. The dua ends with the request that his repentance be accepted and with the mention of Allah as the One who “accepts repentance again and again” and who is “Merciful.” The source book narrates that this is the first dua of repentance that Prophet Adam recited after being sent down from Paradise, and that it was accepted.
When and How to Recite
Prophet Adam’s Dua of Repentance is recited for the forgiveness of sins and the acceptance of repentance. The source book does not mention a specific time or number of recitations; it can be recited at any moment of regret, especially when turning to Allah with the intention of repentance.
Being in a state of wudu is preferable; it is good to recite it while sincerely admitting one’s sins and reflecting on its meaning. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also repent using its meaning in their own language; in repentance, what matters is sincerity, not language.
