Dua for Those Who Have Wronged Themselves

Explanation
This dua is recited in a state of regret and self-reckoning. Its closing sentence recalls the dua that Prophet Yunus made in the belly of the fish.
Dua Text
Transliteration
Allahumma ya Rabbi ya Hayyu ya Qayyumu ya Badi’as-samawati wal-ard, ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram, ya la ilaha illa Anta subhanaka inni kuntu mina az-zalimin.
Meaning
O Allah, O my Lord! O Ever-Living, O Sustainer of all that exists; O Originator of the heavens and the earth without any precedent; O Possessor of Majesty and Honour! There is no god but You; glory be to You; truly, I have been among those who wronged themselves.
What Is Asked in This Dua
In this dua, the servant first calls upon Allah as “my Lord,” and then mentions Him with a series of sublime names: the Ever-Living who sustains all things (al-Hayy and al-Qayyum), the Originator of the heavens and the earth without any precedent (al-Badi’), and the Possessor of Majesty and Honour (Dhul-Jalali wal-Ikram). These names help the servant realise in whose presence he stands and from whom he is asking for pardon.
At the end of the dua, the servant says that there is no god but Allah, glorifies Him, and admits his fault by saying “I have been among those who wronged themselves.” This last sentence recalls the dua that Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him) made in the belly of the fish. There is no explicit request here; the servant’s confession of his state and his glorification of Allah are themselves the plea for forgiveness.
When and How to Recite
The Dua for Those Who Have Wronged Themselves is recited in a state of regret and self-reckoning. The source book mentions no specific time or number of recitations; a person can recite it whenever he recognises his mistake and wishes to turn to Allah.
Being in a state of wudu is preferable; it is good to recite it while reflecting on the meaning of Allah’s names and the confession in the final sentence. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also make this plea with its meaning in their own language. The source book does not mention any particular virtue for this dua.
