Meaning

O Allah! I ask You to bring my heart to life forever with the light of knowing You; O Allah, O Allah, O Allah! Revive me with faith through Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful. O Allah, keep our religion safe, and do not take away our faith at the time of our last breath. Do not set over us those who show us no mercy. Provide us with the good of this world and the Hereafter. Truly, You have power over all things, and answering prayers befits You.

What Is Asked in This Dua

In this dua, the servant asks that his heart be brought to life forever with the light of knowing Allah (ma’rifah). A living heart means a faith that stays alive; the servant asks for this insistently, calling “O Allah” three times, and asks to be revived with faith through Allah’s mercy. Then he asks that his religion remain safe and that his faith not be taken away at his last breath, because the real gain is to die with faith.

The dua continues with the request that those who show no mercy not be set over him, and that he be provided with the good of this world and the Hereafter. The final sentence states that Allah has power over all things and that answering prayers befits Him; this expresses hope that the request will be accepted. In the source book, faith is likened to a lamp burning in an open plain, and it is recommended to keep reciting this dua so that it is protected.
