اَللَّهُ الْهَادِي وَعَلَيْكَ اعْتِمَادِي، اَللَّهُ وَلِيُّ التَّوْفِيقِ وَهُوَ نِعْمَ الرَّفِيقُ
Transliteration
Allahu al-Hadi wa ‘alayka i’timadi, Allahu waliyyu at-tawfiqi wa huwa ni’ma ar-rafiq.
Meaning
It is Allah who guides; my trust is in You. It is Allah who grants success; and what an excellent companion He is.
What Is Asked in This Dua
In this short dua, the servant states that guidance comes from Allah alone and places his trust entirely in Him. Finding the right path is not possible through a person’s own effort but only through Allah showing the way; knowing this, the servant says “my trust is in You” and declares his reliance on Him.
The second sentence states that it is also Allah who grants success (tawfiq) and that He is “an excellent companion.” Here the servant expresses both that he looks to Allah for success in his affairs and that he is not alone on his journey, since Allah is his companion. In the source book, this dua is counted among the duas of Prophet Adam and stands out for being easy to remember. These two short sentences are a complete expression of reliance on Allah, attributing both guidance and success to Him.
When and How to Recite
The Dua for Guidance and Success is recited with the intention of staying on the right path and succeeding in one’s affairs, as an expression of trust and reliance on Allah. The source book mentions no specific time or number of recitations; since it is short and easy to remember, it can be recited at any time of the day, when starting a task or at moments of decision.
Being in a state of wudu is preferable, and it is good to recite it while reflecting on its meaning. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also make this dua with its meaning in their own language. The source book does not mention any particular virtue for this dua.
