Transliteration
Allahumma inni as’aluka min khayrihi wa khayri ma huwa lah, wa a’udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma huwa lah. Allahumma laka al-hamdu Anta kasawtani, as’aluka khayrahu wa khayra ma suni’a lah.
Meaning
O Allah! I ask You for the good of this garment and the good of what comes with it; and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what comes with it. O Allah, all praise is Yours; it is You who have clothed me. I ask for its good and the good of the purpose for which it was made. All praise is for Allah, who clothed me with this and provided it for me without any power or strength on my part.
What Is Asked in This Dua
In this dua, the servant connects an ordinary-looking blessing, the garment he is wearing, with Allah. He asks Allah for the good of the garment, that is, the benefits it brings such as covering, protection and a decent appearance; and he seeks refuge in Him from evils that may come through it, such as arrogance, showing off and extravagance, and from any evil in the purpose for which it was made. In this way he asks that the blessing be used in a blessed and good way.
The second part of the dua is built on gratitude. The servant says that it is Allah who has clothed him, and he praises Him. He asks that the garment and the purpose for which it was made be good. In the last sentence, with the words “without any power or strength on my part,” he admits that he had no share in obtaining this blessing and that the only Provider is Allah. The dua reminds us of gratitude and devotion to Allah even in the most everyday blessing.
When and How to Recite
As stated in the source book, this dua is recited when putting on a new garment. It is fitting to recite it when wearing an item of clothing for the first time, or when new clothes have been bought for Eid or a special day. No specific number is mentioned; it is recited once, while putting the garment on.
Since getting dressed is not tied to wudu, it can also be recited without wudu. What matters is to pause for a moment while dressing, remember that the One who gives the blessing is Allah, and give thanks. If one has not memorised the Arabic, making the dua with the same intention using its meaning in one’s own language is also enough.
