Dua Text
Transliteration
Allahummaghfir ummata Muhammad, Allahummarham ummata Muhammad, Allahummastur qusura ummati Muhammad, Allahumma’fu ummata Muhammad.
Meaning
O Allah! Forgive the Ummah of Muhammad. O Allah, have mercy on the Ummah of Muhammad. O Allah, cover the faults of the Ummah of Muhammad. O Allah, pardon the Ummah of Muhammad.
What Is Asked in This Dua
This dua consists of four requests that the servant makes not for themselves but for the entire Ummah. The first request is forgiveness: may Allah forgive the Ummah of Muhammad. The second is mercy: may He have mercy on the Ummah. The third is the covering of faults: may the flaws and shortcomings of the Ummah be hidden and not exposed. The fourth is pardon: may He remove the punishment entirely.
Each of these four words rests on a different attribute of Allah: al-Ghafur, ar-Rahim, as-Sattar and al-‘Afuww. As the servant asks for them on behalf of the Ummah, they see their own sins within the Ummah and are freed from the narrowness of praying only for themselves. As stated in the description, this dua teaches a Muslim to pray for all Muslims; although it is short, its scope is very wide.
When and How to Recite
According to the source, it is a comprehensive dua made for the entire Ummah. No specific time or number is mentioned; it can be recited at any time, especially in the duas after prayer, when one hears of the hardships of Muslims, and with the intention of repentance. Since it is short, it can be repeated often throughout the day.
Being in a state of wudu is preferable, not required. Seeing oneself as a member of the Ummah while reciting it and asking for forgiveness all together reflects the spirit of the dua. Those who find the Arabic difficult can make the dua in the same way with its English meaning.
