Meaning
There is no god but Allah, who exists at all times. He is the One worshipped in every place. He is the One known through His kindness. He is the One remembered in every tongue. He is the One who is at work every moment. It is Allah alone who protects from the loss of faith and from the evil of Satan. O You whose kindness is eternal, O You who forgive abundantly! By Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.
What Is Asked in This Dua
This dua is built on repeating the sentence “There is no god but Allah” from different angles. The servant mentions Allah as the One who exists at all times, who is worshipped in every place, who is known through His kindness, who is remembered in every tongue and who is at work every moment. Each sentence opens a new window onto tawhid: Allah is not bound by time, place or language; His blessings are seen everywhere, and His governance over the universe never stops.
After this declaration of tawhid, the servant states his main request: it is Allah alone who protects from the loss of faith and from the evil of Satan, and the servant asks Him for this protection. In the last part, Allah is mentioned as the One whose kindness is eternal and who forgives abundantly. In this way the servant asks, relying on His mercy, both for the protection of his faith and for the forgiveness of his sins.
When and How to Recite
The source book recommends reciting it morning and evening, and especially continuing it in times of illness. The book describes this dua as a spiritual fortress for protecting faith; therefore it is fitting to include it among one’s daily morning and evening adhkar and not to abandon it, especially in difficult times such as illness. No specific number is mentioned.
The source book states that reciting it in wudu is considered more effective; so if possible it should be recited in wudu, although wudu is not required for dua. What matters is to recite it while reflecting on the meaning of tawhid in each sentence. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also make this dua using its meaning in their own language.
