Meaning

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, who takes pride in His exaltedness, who is exalted in His glory, who is mighty in His strength, and who knows both the secret and the open. Our Lord! Praise, permanence, majesty and greatness belong to You. You are the Incomparable Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Possessor of severe might and firm strength, the Lord of lords and the Owner of every soul. There is no god but Him; He is the Creator, the Maker, the Shaper; to Him belong the most beautiful names. Whatever is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him; He is the Almighty, the All-Wise. O Allah, keep away from me the traitors, the schemes of the deceivers and the oppression of the oppressors. I have entered the morning seeking refuge in You; I do not possess what I hope for, nor can I ward off what I fear. O You who remove distress, O You who lift sorrow, O You who answer the prayer of the oppressed! Do not punish me for the multitude of my sins; forgive me and have mercy on me. If You punish me, it is because of my sin; and if You forgive me, surely You are the Almighty, the All-Wise.

What Is Asked in This Dua

The dua begins with praise of Allah, who takes pride in His exaltedness, who is mighty in His strength and who knows both the secret and the open. The believer says that praise, permanence, majesty and greatness belong to their Lord alone; they remember Him as the Incomparable Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Possessor of firm strength, the Lord of lords and the Owner of every soul. Then, with expressions taken from Surah al-Hashr, it is recalled that He is the Creator, the Maker and the Shaper, that the most beautiful names belong to Him and that everything glorifies Him.

In the supplication, the believer asks for protection from three dangers: the betrayal of traitors, the schemes of deceivers and the oppression of oppressors. They admit their own helplessness, saying that they cannot attain what they hope for by their own strength nor ward off what they fear. Calling upon Allah, who removes distress, lifts sorrow and answers the prayer of the oppressed, they ask not to be punished for the multitude of their sins, and they ask for forgiveness and mercy.
