Dua Text

Transliteration

Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim. Allahumma ya Malika riqabil-‘awalimi ajma’in, la ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimin. Rabbi adrikni bi-rahmatika ya Arhamar-rahimin, wa najjini minal-ghammi ya Munjiyal-mu’minin, wa farrij ghammi ya Mufarrijal-makrubin.

Meaning

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah! O Master of all the worlds! There is no god but You, glory be to You; indeed, I have been among the wrongdoers. My Lord, reach me with Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful. Save me from sorrow, O Savior of the believers. Turn my grief into relief, O Reliever of the distressed.

What Is Asked in This Dua

The dua begins by calling upon Allah, the Master of all the worlds, and contains the dua that Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him) made in the belly of the fish: There is no god but You, glory be to You; indeed, I have been among the wrongdoers. As the day begins, the servant first affirms Allah’s oneness and perfection, and then confesses his own shortcomings. This order shows that seeking refuge begins with tawhid and repentance.

Then come three requests: that the Lord reach him with His mercy, that he be saved from sorrow, and that his grief be turned into relief. The servant ties each request to a name: the Most Merciful of the merciful, the Savior of the believers, the Reliever of the distressed. The essence of this dua is that a person who has just woken up leans on Allah in the face of the day’s unknowns and asks for relief instead of worry and grief.

When and How to Recite

It is recited upon getting up from sleep in the morning. The source book states that, upon rising from sleep, which is regarded as a half-death, it is fitting to recite this dua regularly or to recite it several times; no exact number is given.

You can recite it as soon as you wake up, before starting your day, while reflecting on its meaning; reciting it after wudu is virtuous. Since it contains the dua of Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him) from Surah al-Anbiya, it also fits times of distress and grief. Those who find the Arabic difficult can express the same refuge with its meaning in their own language.

Virtue

The source book states that, upon rising from sleep, which is regarded as a half-death, it is fitting to recite this dua regularly or to recite it several times.
