Dua Text

Transliteration

Allahummaftah ‘alayya abwaba rahmatika warzuqni fi ziyarati qabri nabiyyika sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallama ma razaqtahu awliya’aka wa ahla ta’atika, waghfir li warhamni ya khayra mas’ulin.

Meaning

O Allah! Open the gates of Your mercy for me. Because of this visit I have made to the grave of Your Prophet, grant me too the favors You have granted to Your close friends (awliya) and to those who obey You. Forgive me and have mercy on me, O best of those who are asked.

What Is Asked in This Dua

In this dua, recited when leaving the grave of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the servant directs his request straight to Allah. The first request is that the gates of mercy be opened for him. At the end of the visit, the servant does not want to leave this blessed place empty-handed; he asks that Allah’s mercy reach him.

The second request concerns the reward of the visit: because of this visit to the Prophet’s grave, the servant asks Allah to grant him too a share of the favors He has given to His close friends (awliya) and to those who obey Him. In other words, he makes his visit a means and asks for a share of what the righteous servants receive. Finally, forgiveness and mercy are asked for, and Allah is remembered as “the best of those who are asked.” Knowing that he stands at the door of the best of givers, the servant asks for pardon, mercy and a good share.

When and How to Recite

According to the source book, this dua is recited when leaving after visiting the grave of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It is fitting to recite it at the end of the visit, as a farewell plea while stepping back from the Rawdah. The source book recommends reciting this dua again and again as a way of asking to come back and visit once more; no specific number is given.

Wudu is not required for the dua; since you are in the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid an-Nabawi), you will already be in a state of wudu. It should be recited with reflection on its meaning, with the sadness of parting and the hope of returning. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also make this plea through its English meaning.
