Aliyy means the One who is above all things and has no equal in highness. The highness here is not height in place, but highness in honor and power. In the tasbih of sajdah (prostration), a name from the same root is mentioned by saying “Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la.”
In the Quran: In Surah al-Baqarah, verse 255 (Ayat al-Kursi), it says: “He is the Most High, the Magnificent.”
It means the Most High, the One above all things. His highness is not in terms of place but in terms of power and honor.
The tasbih “Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la” recited in sajdah (prostration) comes from the same root and means “Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.” Ayat al-Kursi also ends with this name.
