Dua for Good Dreams

Explanation
This is a short dua recited before going to bed with the intention of seeing a good dream.
Dua Text
اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ رُؤْيًا صَالِحَةً صَادِقَةً غَيْرَ كَاذِبَةٍ نَافِعَةً غَيْرَ ضَارَّةٍ
Transliteration
Allahumma inni as’aluka ru’yan salihatan sadiqatan ghayra kadhibatin nafi’atan ghayra darratin.
Meaning
O Allah! I ask You for a dream that is good, true and not false; beneficial and not harmful.
What Is Asked in This Dua
In this short dua the servant asks Allah for a good dream. Yet they describe the dream they want carefully: let it be good and righteous, let it be true and not false; let it be beneficial and not harmful. In other words, the servant asks not just for a pleasant dream, but for one that agrees with the truth, brings peace to the heart and guides toward good. They wish to stay away from confused, frightening or misleading dreams.
The source states that good dreams are from Allah and bad dreams are from Shaytan. So the dua is a way of placing sleep and dreams under Allah’s protection as well. The servant wants to be upon good even in sleep, and to see dreams that leave a beneficial trace on their mind and heart when they wake up. The dua expresses the wish for a peaceful sleep and a good dream by entrusting the night to Allah.
When and How to Recite
As stated in the source, this dua is recited before going to bed with the intention of seeing a good dream. The book advises first saying the ta’awwudh and basmala when lying down and then reciting this dua. It can be recited every night when getting into bed; no specific number is mentioned, and reciting it once is enough.
Going to bed with wudu is good, but it is not a condition for the dua. What matters is reciting it while reflecting on its meaning, with the intention of a true and beneficial dream. Since it is short, it is easy to memorize; whoever finds the Arabic difficult can pray using its meaning in their own language.
