Dua Against Waswasa (Evil Whispers)

Explanation
This dua is recited against whispers (waswasa) and doubts that come into the heart. It contains Surah al-Ikhlas.
Dua Text
Transliteration
Amantu billahi wa rusulih. Allahu ahad, Allahu as-samad, lam yalid wa lam yulad wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad.
Meaning
I believe in Allah and His messengers. Allah is One. Allah is as-Samad; He is in need of nothing. He neither begets nor was He begotten. And nothing is equal to Him.
What Is Asked in This Dua
This dua is more a declaration of faith than a request. The servant first states openly that he believes in Allah and His messengers. The strongest answer to the doubts and whispers that come into the heart is to repeat one’s faith aloud, and this is exactly what the servant does.
Then comes Surah al-Ikhlas. It states that Allah is One, that He is in need of nothing while everything is in need of Him, that He neither begets nor was begotten, and that nothing is equal to Him. These sentences decisively reject every deficient or false thought that may come to mind about Allah. In this way the servant confronts the whispers not by arguing with them but by recalling a firm belief in tawhid (the Oneness of Allah). The dua aims to cleanse the heart of doubts and keep it firm upon faith.
When and How to Recite
The source book recommends reciting it at the moment the whispers come. It is fitting to recite it immediately when doubts and obsessive thoughts about Allah, faith or worship crowd into the heart, or when disturbing thoughts come during the prayer (salah) or during the day. No specific number is mentioned.
Since whispers can come at any moment, being in wudu is not required; of course, reciting it in wudu is better. What matters is to recite it while reflecting on its meaning, as if renewing one’s faith. Reciting Surah al-Ikhlas from memory does not count as touching the mushaf (the written Quran), so there is no harm in reciting it without wudu. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also make this dua using its meaning in their own language.
Virtue
It is recommended to recite it at the moment the whispers come.
