Dua for the Days of Eid al-Adha

Kurban Bayramı Günlerinde Okunacak Dua ve Anlamı

Explanation

This is the dhikr of tawhid (declaring Allah’s oneness) recited during the days of Eid al-Adha.

The dhikr begins with “la ilaha illallah”; tawhid is reinforced with “wahdahu la sharika lah” (He is One, He has no partner); with “lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd” (His is the dominion, His is the praise) Allah is remembered as the Owner of everything and the only One worthy of praise; with “yuhyi wa yumit” (He gives life and causes death) life and death are attributed to Him; and it ends with “wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadir” (He has power over all things). During the days of Eid, the same belief in tawhid is also expressed while the qurbani is slaughtered; the sacrifice reminds us that it is Allah who gives life and takes it.

Dua Text

Transliteration

La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu yuhyi wa yumitu wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadir.

Meaning

There is no god but Allah; He is One and has no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise. He gives life and causes death; He has power over all things.

What Is Asked in This Dua

This is not a dua of request but an affirmation of tawhid: it declares the oneness of Allah, that He has no partner, that the dominion and the praise belong to Him, and that He is the One who gives life and causes death.

When and How to Recite

It is recited during the days of Eid al-Adha. The days of Eid are days when dhikr is increased, together with the slaughtering of the qurbani and the takbir of tashriq.

From the Fajr prayer on the Day of Arafah until the Asr prayer on the fourth day of Eid al-Adha, the takbir of tashriq is said after the obligatory prayers; this dhikr of tawhid, on the other hand, is recited during the day, while slaughtering the qurbani and when exchanging Eid greetings. While slaughtering the qurbani, you also say “Bismillahi Allahu akbar”.
