Dua When Entering the Bath

Explanation
This is the dua to be recited after entering the hammam (bath or bathroom). According to the narrations, it is one of the duas recited by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
The dua has two sides: with “as’aluka” (I ask You), one asks for Paradise and “na’im” (the blessings of Paradise); with “a’udhu bika” (I seek refuge in You), one asks for protection from the Fire. The hammam and the bathroom are places where the body is cleansed with hot water and steam; this is why the source describes it as a place whose cleanliness reminds of Paradise and whose heat reminds of Hell. In this way washing, an everyday task, turns into a moment in which the servant thinks of the Hereafter.
Dua Text
اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ وَنَعِيمِهَا وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ النَّارِ
Transliteration
Allahumma inni as’aluka mina l-jannati wa na’imiha wa a’udhu bika mina n-nar.
Meaning
O Allah! I ask You for Paradise and the blessings within it. I seek refuge in You from Hell and from the scorching heat of Hell.
What Is Asked in This Dua
Paradise and its blessings are asked for, and refuge is sought in Allah from the heat of Hell. Since the hammam recalls Paradise with its cleanliness and Hell with its heat, this dua brings both of these truths to mind at once.
When and How to Recite
It is recited after entering the hammam or bathroom. No specific number is given in the source.
Reciting it while feeling the warmth of the water deepens its meaning. Keeping oneself covered and avoiding waste are part of the etiquette of the hammam.
The etiquette of the hammam and bathroom includes taking care to stay covered, not wasting water and not staying longer than necessary. If the intention of washing is ghusl, the conditions of ghusl are observed separately. The dua itself is recited after coming through the door, before touching the water.
Virtue
The hammam is a place of cleansing; in its cleanliness it resembles Paradise, and in its heat it resembles Hell. When entering the hammam, a person should remember both Paradise and Hell; Imam Gumushanevi included this dua in his book for that purpose.
