Dua for Attaining Halal Wealth

Helâl Mala Kavuşma Duası: Arapçası, Okunuşu ve Anlamı

Explanation

This is a dua recited to attain lawful (halal) wealth.

The dua is built on two “lawla” (were it not for) sentences: “Were it not for Your bounty, I would have been among those who perish; were it not for Your decree (Your judgement), I would have been among those who are saved.” The second sentence is surprising at first glance: the servant does not count even his salvation as his own achievement, but ties it to Allah’s judgement. That is why, before asking for wealth, the dua makes a person admit his helplessness. The source recommends this dua to those who wish to attain lawful wealth; it reminds us that wealth, just like life, is a bounty from Allah.

Dua Text

Transliteration

Allahumma lawla ‘ata’uka la-kuntu minal-halikin, wa lawla qada’uka la-kuntu minal-fa’izin.

Meaning

O Allah! Were it not for Your bounty, I would have been among those who perish. And were it not for Your decree and destiny, I would have been among those who are saved.

What Is Asked in This Dua

Attaining lawful wealth is asked for. Rather than asking for wealth directly, the dua asks with humility and surrender, reminding the servant what his state would be were it not for Allah’s bounty and destiny.

When and How to Recite

It has no set time, and the source does not give a number either. It can be recited when asking for earnings, when starting work and when your provision is tight.

The source book states that Allah’s bounty to His servants is abundant, while our servitude counts for nothing in comparison; and that man is ungrateful to his Lord and cannot give thanks as he should.

Reciting it while working for your earnings, when starting a business deal and when receiving a salary or a harvest reminds you of the source of the blessing. A short word of thanks (alhamdulillah) after the dua and, if possible, some charity fit the source’s emphasis on “not being ungrateful”.

Virtue

Allah’s bounty to His servants is abundant, while our servitude is nothing compared to these blessings. Man, in his very nature, is ungrateful to his Lord; he does not give thanks as he should and does not pay the due of the blessings.
