Meaning
O Allah! Keep us and our religion safe. Do not take away our faith at the moment of our last breath. Do not give power over us to those who do not fear You and show us no mercy. Provide us with the good of this world and the Hereafter. Surely You have power over all things.
What Is Asked in This Dua
In this dua for preserving faith, the servant asks for safety for themselves and for their religion: “Keep us and our religion safe.” Then they point to the most delicate moment, the last breath, and ask that their faith not be taken away at that moment. This is a person seeking refuge in Allah from what they fear most in this world: departing without faith.
In the rest of the dua, the servant asks that those who do not fear Allah and show them no mercy not be given power over them; they ask for protection from the oppressive and the merciless. Then they ask to be provided with the good of this world and the Hereafter. The dua ends with the acknowledgement “You have power over all things”: the servant accepts that all of these requests can only be fulfilled by Allah, who is capable of everything. The fact that the dua is phrased in the plural shows that the person is praying not only for themselves but for all believers.
When and How to Recite
According to the source, this dua is recommended as a dua to recite to repel Satan’s efforts against a person at their last breath. For this reason, the aim is to recite it regularly during one’s lifetime and to keep alive the intention of departing with faith at the last breath.
