Dua Text
Transliteration
Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim. Fa-fatahna abwabas-sama’i bi-ma’in munhamir, wa fajjarnal-arda ‘uyunan faltaqal-ma’u ‘ala amrin qad qudir.
Meaning
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. So We opened the gates of the sky with pouring water, and We made the earth burst forth with springs, so the waters met for a matter already decreed.
What Is Asked in This Dua
The Dua for Rain is not a request built from a servant’s own words; it is a plea that recalls Allah’s mercy through two verses taken from the Quran. The dua begins with the names ar-Rahman and ar-Rahim: in the very first sentence, the servant acknowledges that the power which sends rain is Allah’s boundless mercy.
The verses describe Allah opening the gates of the sky with pouring water, making the earth burst forth with springs, and the waters meeting for a matter already decreed. A person who recites these verses during a drought is in effect saying: You are the One who fills both the sky and the earth with water; if You will, You can open the gates in an instant. In this way the servant seeks the remedy for the dry earth not in themselves but in Allah, who decrees everything in due measure, and asks Him to open the gates of His mercy.
When and How to Recite
According to the source, this dua is recited to plead for rain in times of drought. It can be recited alone or in congregational supplications during periods when the rain has stopped and the land and crops are left without water. The source does not mention a specific number or time.
Since the text consists of verses from Surah al-Qamar, it is preferable to recite it with wudu. It should be recited while reflecting on the meaning of the verses and remembering that it is Allah who brings the sky and the earth together with water; someone who finds the Arabic difficult can also ask Allah for rain using the meaning of the verses in their own language.
