What is Day of Ashura?
The tenth day of Muharram. When the Prophet ﷺ came to Medina, he saw the Jews fasting on this day; he said, “We are closer to Musa than you are,” fasted himself and recommended fasting on it (Bukhari, Sawm 69). It is also the day on which Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred at Karbala.
What to do
- Fast on Ashura. To avoid resembling the Jewish observance, it is recommended to fast two days: 9–10 or 10–11 Muharram.
- Sharing ashura (Noah’s pudding) with neighbours and relatives is a widespread tradition.
- Give charity (sadaqah) and look after orphans and those in need.
