What is Islamic New Year?
The first day of the Hijri calendar. The calendar takes the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ migration (hijrah) from Mecca to Medina as its starting point; its months follow the moon rather than the sun, so every year they move about eleven days earlier. Muharram is one of the four months the Quran calls the “sacred months”, in which war and injustice are regarded as forbidden.
What to do
- Reflect on the past year and make good intentions for the new one.
- Voluntary fasts kept in the month of Muharram are regarded as virtuous.
- Increase your repentance (tawbah) and istighfar (seeking forgiveness).
