Dua Text
Transliteration
Labbayka Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk, innal-hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.
Meaning
Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Surely all praise and blessings belong to You. And the dominion is Yours too; You have no partner.
What Is Asked in This Dua
The Talbiyah is an answer to Allah’s invitation to Hajj. By saying “Labbayk,” that is, “Here I am, at Your command,” the servant declares that he is hastening to the call and is ready for the command. This answer to the call is given again and again; each time the servant proclaims that Allah has no partner. In this way, it is expressed at the very first step that the journey of Hajj is built on tawhid.
Then the servant says that praise and blessings belong to Allah alone; he affirms that everything he has comes from Him and that all praise belongs to Him alone. He repeats that the dominion is also Allah’s and that He has no partner. The Talbiyah is not a request but a response to the invitation and a declaration of tawhid. The source book states that this dua is a gift handed down to us from Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and that reciting the Talbiyah during Hajj is regarded as equivalent to saying the takbir in prayer.
When and How to Recite
The Talbiyah is recited upon making the intention for Hajj or Umrah and entering ihram, and it is repeated throughout the Hajj. Rather than a specific number, it is customary to say it often and aloud for as long as one is in ihram. The source book states that reciting the Talbiyah during Hajj is equivalent to saying the takbir in prayer.
Being in a state of wudu or ghusl when entering ihram is essential; the Talbiyah is also recited in this state, reflecting on its meaning and mindful of answering Allah’s invitation. The Arabic is short and easy; reciting it while knowing its meaning deepens the spirit of the journey.
