Dua Text

Transliteration

Qul a’udhu bi-kalimatillahit-tammati la yujawizuhunna barrun wa la fajir, wa min sharri ma khalaqa wa dhara’a wa bara’a, wa min sharri ma yanzilu minas-sama’i wa ma ya’ruju fiha, wa min sharri ma dhara’a fil-ardi wa ma yakhruju minha, wa min sharri kulli tariqin illa tariqan yatruqu bi-khayrin ya Rahman.

Meaning

Say: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, which no one, good or bad, can surpass. From the evil of all the beings He has created; from the evil of what descends from the sky and what ascends to it; from the evil of what He has created on earth and what comes out of it; from the evil of everything that comes by night, except what comes with good, I seek refuge in You, O Most Merciful.

What Is Asked in This Dua

In this dua, the servant seeks refuge in Allah’s “perfect words.” The words of Allah are a decree that no one, good or bad, can surpass; whoever seeks refuge in them enters a protection that no created being can withstand. Most of the dua lists, one by one, the evils from which the servant wishes to be protected.

The servant seeks refuge in Allah from the evil of all the beings Allah has created, from the evil of what descends from the sky and what ascends to it, and from the evil of what is created on earth and what comes out of it. Finally, they ask for protection from the evil of everything that comes by night, but they exclude from this request whatever comes with good. In this way, the protection of Allah, ar-Rahman (the Most Merciful), is sought against harm that may come from every direction, seen and unseen.
