Morning Dua Upon the Fitrah of Islam

Sabah Kalkınca Okunacak Fıtrat Duası: Arapçası ve Anlamı

Explanation

This is the dua recited upon getting up in the morning, for being upon the fitrah of Islam and for the flourishing of the religion we follow.

The dua affirms four things: the fitrah of Islam (the pure belief in our created nature), the word of sincere devotion (la ilaha illallah), the religion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and the hanif way of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). “Hanif” means one who turns away from falsehood towards the truth, and “muslim” means one who submits to Allah. With the last sentence, “wa ma nahnu mina l-mushrikin” (we are not among those who associate partners with Allah), tawhid is reinforced. With this dua, a person who wakes up in the morning states, in the very first moment, the standard by which they will live throughout the day.

Dua Text

Transliteration

Asbahna ‘ala fitrati l-islami wa kalimati l-ikhlasi wa dini nabiyyina Muhammadin salla llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, wa ‘ala millati abina Ibrahima ‘alayhi s-salamu hanifan musliman wa ma nahnu mina l-mushrikin.

Meaning

We have entered the morning upon the fitrah (natural disposition) of Islam, the word of sincere devotion, the religion of our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and the upright (hanif) and submitting (muslim) way of our father Ibrahim (peace be upon him). We are not among those who associate partners with Allah.

What Is Asked in This Dua

One asks to begin the day upon the fitrah of Islam, the word of sincere devotion and the hanif religion of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). In the very first moment of the day, the servant affirms whose religion they follow and declares that they are far from shirk (associating partners with Allah).

When and How to Recite

It is recited when waking up in the morning, as you begin the day. For the evening, the same dua can be recited with the form “amsayna” (we have entered the evening).

The source book states that as long as one keeps up this dua, there is no doubt that one will reach the intention one hopes for. Reciting it as soon as you get out of bed, before the busyness of the world begins, is most in keeping with its meaning.

The evening form begins “Amsayna ‘ala fitrati l-islam…”; the rest is the same. Reciting it after the Fajr adhan or as soon as you get out of bed makes tawhid the first word of your day. The note in the source, “as long as one keeps it up”, recommends reciting the dua continually rather than just once.

Virtue

The source book states that as long as one keeps up this dua, there is no doubt that one will reach the intention one hopes for, and that persevering in this dua is to our benefit.
