Duas for Needs (Hajat)

The Most Accepted Dua for Needs (Hajah)

En Makbul Hacet Duası: Okunuşu ve Anlamı

Explanation

Hajah means a need that one asks to be fulfilled. For something to come about, for a hardship to be lifted or for a wish to come true, a two-rak’ah voluntary (nafl) prayer is performed with the intention of seeking Allah’s pleasure; this is called the prayer of need (Salat al-Hajah). This is the dua recited after that prayer. The source describes this dua as “a highly accepted dua” and states that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited this dua and performed this prayer, and gave his community advice on this matter. The language of the dua is built from beginning to end on the word “everything”: one calls on the Lord, Creator, End and Knower of everything; and at the end, the servant says that they ask for nothing of worldly things, only that their need be fulfilled.

Meaning

“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah, I ask of You. For You are the Lord of all things, the Creator of all things and the End of all things; You are the One who knows all things. I ask of You by Your power, through which You decree over all things: grant us everything and admit us to Your Paradise without any recompense. Do not call us to account for anything; I do not ask You for anything of the things of this world. O Allah, Fulfiller of needs, fulfill my need by Your might, Your majesty, Your kindness and Your generosity. O Most Generous, have mercy on me through Your mercy; You are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy. There is no god but You, You are One; we are servants who have submitted to You. All praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.”

What Is Asked in This Dua

Any need we want fulfilled is asked for: a matter to open up, a hardship to be lifted, an illness to be healed, a blessed portion in life (kismet), or a door that seems closed to be opened a little. The dua does not list any request one by one; by saying “fulfill my need”, it entrusts the wish within the servant directly to Allah.

When and How to Recite

It is recited after the prayer of need (Salat al-Hajah). The prayer of need is a two-rak’ah voluntary prayer performed for Allah’s pleasure; it has no set time and can be performed at any time except the times when praying is disliked (makruh). Performing it after Isha and in the quiet hours of the night is a common preference.

After the prayer, salawat is recited upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, then this dua is recited and the need is asked of Allah. No specific number of recitations is mentioned in the source. Being in a state of wudu, facing the qibla and reciting it while reflecting on its meaning are preferred; those who find it hard to recite the Arabic can also make the dua with its meaning in their own language.

Virtue

The source states that the dua for needs is a highly accepted dua and that it has been tried and tested by our elders. It is narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited this dua and performed the prayer of need, and that he gave his community various pieces of advice on this matter.
