Meaning

Our Lord! Do not let our hearts swerve after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from Your presence. Indeed, You are the Bestower. My God, we hope for Your mercy and we fear Your punishment. O Allah, protect our faith from the accursed Shaytan throughout our whole life, and above all do not let him steal it away at the moment of our last breath. For the blessing of the Mighty Quran and for the sake of Your Noble Messenger, by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

What Is Asked in This Dua

The dua opens with a verse from Surah Al Imran. The servant asks that their heart not swerve after being guided, and that Allah grant them mercy from His presence; they call upon Allah as “the One who gives abundantly”. This first part voices the greatest worry of a guided servant: losing the faith they have been given.

In the second part the servant both hopes for mercy and fears punishment, standing between fear and hope. The main request is that their faith be protected from the accursed Shaytan for their whole life, and above all that Shaytan not be allowed to steal their faith at the last breath. The servant asks this for the blessing of the Quran and for the sake of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, relying on Allah’s mercy. The dua brings together the longing to die with faith and seeking refuge in Allah from Shaytan’s tricks.

When and How to Recite

The source does not mention a specific time or number; it can be recited at any time. Since it is a dua about protecting one’s faith and the worry of the last breath, it fits moments when you want to renew your faith, times when thoughts of illness and death weigh heavily, or as part of your daily duas.

Being in a state of wudu is preferable but not a condition for dua. Since the verse is recited from memory, the ruling on touching the Mushaf does not come into question here. What matters is reciting it while reflecting on its meaning, and sincerely feeling the wish to die with faith at the last breath. You can also make this dua with its meaning in your own language.
