Meaning

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah! Make me light; place light in my heart, my mind, my hearing and my sight. Place light above me, on my right and on my left. O Allah, increase my light, give me light and make me light. For the sake of the light of Your Essence and Your Attributes, the love of Your Beloved and the secret of Your Book; for the sake of the light of Muhammad, by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

What Is Asked in This Dua

In the Dua for Noor, the servant asks Allah for one thing only: light. But they ask for this light for their whole being. First they say “make me light”; then they ask for light in their heart, mind, hearing and sight. By asking to be surrounded by light above, on the right and on the left, they ask for their inner and outer self, and everything they see and hear, to be illuminated.

In the rest of the dua, the request is reinforced three times: increase my light, give me light, make me light. The servant presents this request for the sake of the light of Allah’s Essence and Attributes, the love they feel for His Beloved, the Prophet ﷺ, and the secret of His Book; they make the light of Muhammad ﷺ their means (wasilah). They close the dua by seeking refuge in Allah’s mercy, saying “O Most Merciful of the merciful”. In short, this dua is the plea of a heart, mind and body left in darkness to be spiritually illuminated.

When and How to Recite

No specific time or number of recitations is mentioned for this dua in the source. Based on its description, it can be recited at any time when you wish for your inner and outer self to be filled with spiritual light; when you feel a tightness in the heart, heedlessness, or a lack of understanding and insight.

It is preferable to recite it with wudu and in a calm state, reflecting on its meaning. If you recite it knowing which part of you and which direction you are asking to be filled with light, the dua becomes more mindful. Someone who finds the Arabic difficult can also ask for light using its meaning in their own language.
