Meaning
O Allah! Grant me understanding in religion, increase in knowledge, sufficient provision and health in my body. Grant me repentance before death, ease at the moment of death, forgiveness after death, salvation on the Day of Reckoning and safe passage over the Sirat. O Owner of grace and kindness, by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.
What Is Asked in This Dua
In the dua of Imam Abu Hanifa, the servant gathers nine requests concerning this world and the Hereafter into a single text. Four of the requests relate to this world: understanding in religion, that is, grasping the religion correctly; increase in knowledge; sufficient provision, neither more nor less than needed; and health in the body. Here the servant asks not for wealth but for sufficiency; this is contentment reflected in a dua.
The requests relating to the Hereafter are arranged around death: repentance before death, ease at the moment of death, forgiveness after death, salvation on the Day of Reckoning, and passage over the Sirat. The servant thinks one by one about the time before death, the moment of death and what comes after it, and asks for a separate good for each stage. The dua ends by remembering Allah as the Owner of grace and kindness and seeking refuge in His mercy; it is accepted that all these requests can only come true through His generosity.
When and How to Recite
No specific time or number of recitations is mentioned for this dua in the source. It can be recited at any time with the intention of asking for all-round good in this world and the Hereafter, especially after the prayer (salah) and at times when duas are made.
Being in a state of wudu is preferable. Reciting it while thinking about the nine requests one by one and knowing what each of them means makes the dua more mindful. Someone who finds the Arabic difficult can also offer the same requests to Allah using its meaning in their own language.
