Transliteration
Ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram, ya Arhamar-Rahimin, tawajjahtu ilayk. Allahumma inni as’aluka bi-annaka antallahu la ilaha illa antal-Wahidul-Ahadul-Fardus-Samad, alladhi lam yalid wa lam yulad wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad.
Meaning
O Possessor of Majesty and Honor! O Most Merciful of the merciful! I have turned to You. O Allah, I ask of You, for You are Allah, there is no god but You. You are the One, the Unique and the Self-Sufficient (as-Samad); You have not begotten, nor were You begotten, and nothing has ever been equal to You.
What Is Asked in This Dua
In the dua of Muadh ibn Jabal, the believer first calls upon Allah with two of His attributes: Possessor of Majesty and Honor, and Most Merciful of the merciful. Then, by saying “I have turned to You”, they express that they have turned away from every other door and turned to Allah alone. This turning reveals the believer’s attitude before the actual request of the dua.
In the second part, the believer bases their request on a testimony of tawhid (the oneness of Allah): they declare that there is no god but Allah, that He is al-Wahid and al-Ahad, meaning the One and Unique; al-Fard, meaning the Incomparable; and as-Samad, meaning the One who needs nothing. By saying that He has not begotten, was not begotten and that nothing is equal to Him, they put the attributes of Surah al-Ikhlas into the language of dua. The believer presents their request for the sake of this testimony; they do not state explicitly what they are asking for, which is why this is a dua of turning to Allah and of tawhid that can be recited for any need.
