Meaning

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah! Illuminate my eyes for the sake of the name of Muhammad. Illuminate my eyes for the sake of the deeds of Muhammad. Illuminate my eyes for the sake of the secret, the truthfulness and the forbearance of Muhammad. O Light of lights, O You who illuminate all affairs! O Healer, O All-Sufficient, O Giver of well-being! For the sake of these names, O Allah.

What Is Asked in This Dua

In the Dua of Light, the believer asks Allah to illuminate their eyes; but they repeat this request five times, each time taking a different quality of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as a means of approach. They ask for their eyes to be illuminated first for the sake of the name of Muhammad ﷺ, then for the sake of his deeds, his secret, his truthfulness and his forbearance. In this way, the believer presents their request while remembering the finest qualities of the servant Allah loves most. According to the source, this light is asked for not only for the eyes but also for the heart.

In the last part of the dua, Allah is called upon by His names: the Light of lights, the One who illuminates all affairs, the Healer, the All-Sufficient and the Giver of well-being. Since the illumination of the eyes is a matter of healing and well-being, the names ash-Shafi, al-Kafi and al-Mu’afi are mentioned in particular. By saying “for the sake of these names”, the believer bases their dua on the names of Allah and expects the illumination of eye and heart from Him.

When and How to Recite

The source does not mention a specific time or number of recitations for this dua. According to its description, it can be recited at any time when asking for the illumination of the eyes and the heart, for the health of the eyes, or with the intention of spiritual enlightenment.

It is preferable to be in a state of wudu. It should be recited while reflecting on the qualities of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that are mentioned and on Allah’s names ash-Shafi, al-Kafi and al-Mu’afi. Anyone who finds the Arabic difficult can ask for light for the eyes and the heart through its meaning in their own language.
