Dua for Honor and Dignity (Izzah)

İzzet ve Şeref Duası: Arapçası, Okunuşu ve Anlamı

Explanation

These are verses of the Holy Quran recited for honor and dignity (Al Imran 26, at-Talaq 3). Honor and dignity come from Allah; Allah exalts whomever He wills and humbles whomever He wills.

Verse 26 of Al Imran begins with “O Allah, Owner of all dominion” and proclaims that it is Allah who gives both dominion and honor to whomever He wills; the last sentence of verse 3 of at-Talaq says that Allah has set a measure for everything. When the two verses are recited together, this belief emerges: standing depends on a measure, and the One who sets that measure is Allah. That is why the dua teaches us to gain worth not by trying to please people, but by turning to Allah.

Dua Text

تُعِزُّ مَنْ تَشَاءُ وَتُذِلُّ مَنْ تَشَاءُ ۞ قَدْ جَعَلَ اللّٰهُ لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدْرًا

Transliteration

Tu’izzu man tasha’u wa tudhillu man tasha’. Qad ja’alallahu li-kulli shay’in qadra.

Meaning

You raise the worth of whomever You will, and You humble whomever You will. Allah has set a measure for everything.

What Is Asked in This Dua

Worth, honor and dignity in the sight of Allah are asked for. The verses proclaim that both raising up and bringing down belong to Allah; the servant asks for standing not from people but from Allah.

When and How to Recite

It has no set time, and the source does not give a number either. It can be recited at times of losing standing, suffering injustice or starting a new position.

The source book states that the value people give to a servant whom Allah does not value lasts only up to the door of the grave; and that whoever wants value both in this world and in the Hereafter should keep reciting these verses.

Since these are verses of the Holy Quran, it is good manners to recite them with wudu and, if possible, in full. It is recommended to recite them when starting a job, a position or joining a community, and when you have been unjustly humiliated; the source says that whoever wants value both in this world and in the Hereafter should keep reciting these verses.

Virtue

The source book states that the value people give to a servant whom Allah does not value lasts only up to the door of the grave; and that whoever wants value both in this world and in the Hereafter should recite these verses and take refuge in their Lord.
