Meaning

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah, I glorify You and praise You. All praise is Yours, as much as the measure of Your majesty, the vastness of Your knowledge, the utmost reach of Your power, and in the way that pleases You. You alone are worthy of praise; praise has no limit other than You and no other destination. All praise is Yours for all Your blessings. I glorify the One whose Throne is in the heavens and whose power is manifest on earth. O Allah, do not let my enemies rejoice at my misfortune, do not hand me over to them, and keep their hands away from me. O Allah, I have wronged many of Your servants; by Your mercy, repay their rights on my behalf and forgive me. Surely You are the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

What Is Asked in This Dua

The dua opens with the basmala and continues with a long section of praise. The believer praises Allah as much as the measure of His majesty, the vastness of His knowledge and the utmost reach of His power, and in the way that pleases Him; they declare that He alone is truly worthy of praise and that praise has no limit or destination other than Him. They give thanks for all blessings and glorify their Lord, whose Throne is in the heavens and whose power is manifest on earth.

Two concrete requests follow. The first is protection from enemies: the believer asks that their enemies not rejoice at their misfortune, that they not be handed over to them, and that their hands be kept away. The second concerns the rights of others: the believer admits to having wronged many people and asks Allah, by His mercy, to repay those rights on their behalf and to forgive them. The dua ends by affirming that Allah is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
