Meaning

In the name of Allah. Praise be to Allah that I am upon the religion of Islam. O Allah! Make me one of those who repent, of those who are purified and of Your righteous servants. Make me one of those who feel no fear and no grief. Praise be to Allah, who made water pure and purifying and made Islam a light.

What Is Asked in This Dua

This dua, recited when beginning wudu, opens with the basmala and praise. The servant praises Allah for being upon the religion of Islam; in other words, before starting wudu he remembers the greatest blessing of all, faith. He then asks Allah to make him one of those who repent, of those who are purified and of the righteous servants. These three requests reflect the wish that wudu cleanse not only the body but also the heart and one’s deeds.

In the rest of the dua, the servant asks to be one of those who feel no fear and no grief; this is the state of the servants who will be safe in the Hereafter. In the last sentence, Allah is praised for making water pure and Islam a light. The source states that this dua reminds us that water cleanses the outside while Islam cleanses the inside. Thus, as he reaches for the water, the servant connects the cleanliness of his body with the light of his heart. It is narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ constantly recited this dua during wudu.

When and How to Recite

It is recited when beginning wudu, as you reach for the water or just before washing your hands. It can be repeated at every wudu; the source narrates that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ constantly recited it during wudu. No specific number of recitations is mentioned; reciting it once is enough. Facing the qibla while making wudu is a good etiquette. The essential thing is to reflect on its meaning and recite it remembering that water cleanses the outside and Islam the inside; those who find the Arabic difficult can also make the dua with its meaning in their own language.

Virtue

It is narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ constantly recited it during wudu; it is also found in Bukhari and Muslim.
