Dua Text
Transliteration
Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, ashhadu an la ilaha illa anta wahdaka la sharika lak, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk, ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduka wa rasuluk.
Meaning
O Allah! I glorify You and remember You with Your praise. I bear witness that there is no god but You; You are One and You have no partner. I ask You for forgiveness and I turn to You. I bear witness that Muhammad is Your servant and Your Messenger.
What Is Asked in This Dua
This dua, recited after wudu, combines glorification, praise, the testimony of faith and repentance. First, the servant declares Allah free of every imperfection and remembers Him with His praise. Then he bears witness that there is no god but Allah, that He is One and has no partner. These sentences make sure that, after the body has been cleansed with wudu, the heart is also purified with tawhid.
In the rest of the dua, the servant asks Allah for forgiveness and says that he turns to Him in repentance. Finally, he bears witness that Muhammad ﷺ is Allah’s servant and Messenger. In this way, the dua contains both parts of the testimony of faith. The source states that reciting the testimony of faith after wudu will be a means of dying with faith. At the end of every wudu, the servant renews and refreshes his faith; wudu becomes not only a preparation for prayer but also an opportunity to remember tawhid.
When and How to Recite
It is recited right after performing wudu, before drying off or while drying off. It can be repeated after every wudu; the source mentions no specific number of recitations, and reciting it once is enough. Facing the qibla while reciting it is a good etiquette. Since one has just made wudu, it is already recited in the most fitting state. The essential thing is to reflect on its meaning and say the words of tawhid and the testimony of faith consciously; those who find the Arabic difficult can also bear witness and ask for forgiveness with its meaning in their own language.
Virtue
It is stated that reciting the testimony of faith after wudu will be a means of dying with faith.
