Tawaf Duas: All the Duas Recited While Circling the Kaaba

Tavaf Duaları: Okunuşu, Anlamı ve Sırası

Explanation

These are all the duas recited at each point while circling the Kaaba in tawaf. Tawaf begins at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) and proceeds from left to right. The four corners of the Kaaba are called the Iraqi Corner (Rukn al-Iraqi), the Yemeni Corner (Rukn al-Yamani), the Syrian Corner (Rukn al-Shami) and the Black Stone corner; a dua specific to each corner is recited there. Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone, the dua “Rabbana atina” recited by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is said.

Dua Text

Meaning

After kissing the Black Stone: O Allah! Believing in You, affirming Your Book, keeping my promise to You and following the Sunnah of Your Prophet Muhammad.
While circling the Kaaba: O Allah! This House is Your House, this sanctuary is Your sanctuary, and this safety is Your safety. This is the station of the one who seeks refuge in You from the Fire. Make our flesh and our skin forbidden to the Fire of Hell.
At the Iraqi Corner: O Allah! I seek refuge in You from associating partners with You, from doubt, from discord, from bad character, from a bad end, and from seeing evil in my family, my wealth and my children.
At the Yemeni Corner: O Allah! I seek refuge in You from disbelief, from poverty, from the punishment of the grave, and from the trials of life and death. And I seek refuge in You from disgrace in this world and the Hereafter.
Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone: Our Lord! Give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
At the Syrian Corner: O Allah! Make this an accepted Hajj, a rewarded effort, a forgiven sin, an accepted deed and a trade that never perishes. By Your mercy, O Almighty, O Most Forgiving.

What Is Asked in This Dua

The tawaf duas are a set of duas recited at each point while circling the Kaaba. While kissing the Black Stone, the servant says that he begins tawaf with the intention of faith, affirming Allah’s Book, keeping his promise to Him and following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. During tawaf he remembers that the Kaaba is Allah’s House and the sanctuary is His sanctuary, and asks that his flesh and skin be made forbidden to the Fire of Hell.

At the corners, duas of seeking refuge come to the fore: at the Iraqi Corner one seeks refuge in Allah from associating partners with Him, from doubt, from discord, from bad character, from a bad end and from seeing evil in one’s family, wealth and children; at the Yemeni Corner from disbelief, from poverty, from the punishment of the grave, from the trials of life and death and from disgrace in both worlds. Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone one asks for good in this world and the Hereafter and protection from the Fire. At the Syrian Corner one asks, by the mercy of Allah, the Almighty and Most Forgiving, that the Hajj be accepted, the sa’i rewarded, the sin forgiven, the deed accepted and the trade never perishing.

When and How to Recite

These duas are recited while circling the Kaaba in tawaf. Tawaf begins at the Black Stone and proceeds from left to right, and on reaching each of the four corners of the Kaaba (the Iraqi Corner, the Yemeni Corner, the Syrian Corner and the Black Stone corner) the dua specific to that corner is recited. Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone, the dua “Rabbana atina” recited by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is said. The source book states that the same dua should be recited again each time one reaches a given corner.

The source book recommends making dua throughout the tawaf, saying that a tawaf without dua is as lacking in blessing as cheese without fat. Tawaf is performed with wudu; it is good to recite the duas while reflecting on their meaning, and those who find the Arabic difficult may also make the duas with their meaning in their own language.

Virtue

The source book states that a tawaf without dua is as lacking in blessing as cheese without fat, and recommends making dua throughout the tawaf. It is stated that the same dua should be recited again each time one reaches a given corner during tawaf.
