Meaning
O Allah! We ask You for help, we seek Your forgiveness and we ask You to guide us. We believe in You, we turn to You and we put our trust in You. We attribute all good to You. We thank You and we are not ungrateful to You. We abandon and turn away from whoever disobeys You. O Allah! You alone we worship; for You we pray and prostrate. To You we hasten, and toward Your pleasure we turn. We hope for Your mercy and fear Your punishment. Surely Your punishment will reach the disbelievers.
What Is Asked in This Dua
The qunut duas are a declaration of devotion in which the servant proclaims, all at once, where he stands before Allah. In the first part, the servant asks Allah for help, forgiveness and guidance; he says that he believes in Him, turns to Him in repentance and trusts in Him alone. He attributes all good to Allah, thanks Him and states that he will not be ungrateful. He also declares that he will distance himself from those who disobey Allah and abandon them.
In the second part, the servant states that he worships Allah alone and that he performs his prayer and prostration for Him alone. He hastens to Him and turns toward His pleasure. He hopes for His mercy and fears His punishment, showing a balanced servanthood between hope and fear. At the end of the dua, it is recalled that Allah’s punishment will reach the disbelievers. The word qunut itself means humility and submission, and the dua is the spoken form of exactly this attitude.
When and How to Recite
The qunut duas are recited in the third rak’ah of the Witr prayer. In this rak’ah, after reciting al-Fatihah and a surah, you say the takbir, place your hands together again, recite the qunut duas and then go into ruku’. No separate number of recitations is mentioned in the source for these duas; they are recited once within the prayer.
Since the prayer is performed in a state of wudu, these duas are also recited with wudu. Reciting them while knowing their meaning helps you do justice to qunut, which means humility and submission. Within the prayer they are recited in Arabic; their meaning in your own language is learned separately.
