What Is Asked in This Dua
The Eid takbir is not a dua of request but a dhikr proclaiming the greatness of Allah. By saying “Allah is the Greatest,” the servant declares again and again that He is exalted above everything. Even in the midst of the joy of Eid, one remembers that Allah is the Greatest; He is the Owner of the blessing, of the Eid and of the celebration.
The sentence “There is no god but Allah” in the middle of the takbir is the essence of tawhid; the proclamation of greatness is joined with the proclamation of oneness. At the end, “all praise belongs to Allah” is said. In this way, in a few short sentences the servant expresses Allah’s greatness, His oneness and that He alone is worthy of praise. This dhikr is a communal cry of gratitude and tawhid that fills the days of Eid with the remembrance of Allah.
When and How to Recite
According to the source, this takbir is said on the way to the Eid prayer and during the days of Eid; it is also known as Takbir al-Tashriq. Therefore, during the days of Eid it should be said without neglect right after the closing salam of every obligatory prayer.
