Dua Text
Transliteration
Allahumma la taj’al hadha akhiral-‘ahdi bi-harami Rasulika, wa yassir liyal-‘awda ilal-haramayni sabilan sahlatan bi-mannika wa fadlika, warzuqnil-‘afwa wal-‘afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirati, wa ruddana salimina ghanimina ila awtanina aminin.
Meaning
O Allah! Do not make this visit of mine to the sanctuary of Your Beloved the last. Through Your grace and bounty, make it easy for me to visit the Two Holy Sanctuaries (Haramayn) again. Grant me Your pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. Return us to our homelands safe, rewarded and secure.
What Is Asked in This Dua
In this dua, recited when leaving Madinah al-Munawwarah, the servant first asks that this visit not be the last. The words “Do not make this visit of mine to the sanctuary of Your Beloved the last” carry the sadness of leaving the Prophet’s city and the longing to return. The servant makes clear that he asks for this not through his own strength but through Allah’s grace and bounty; he asks that visiting the Two Holy Sanctuaries again be made easy for him.
Then comes a request that spans both worlds: pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. Pardon is the forgiveness of sins; well-being is soundness of body and faith. In the last sentence, a prayer is made for the journey home: to return to one’s homeland safe, rewarded and secure. Here, being “rewarded” refers less to material gain than to returning with the spiritual gain of the Hajj and the visit. The dua is the farewell plea of someone who leaves without forgetting what he leaves behind and who hopes to be reunited with it.
When and How to Recite
According to the source book, this is the last dua recited when leaving Madinah al-Munawwarah. It is fitting to recite it once the visit is complete and you set off, before leaving the city; it carries the wish to be granted another visit. The source book does not mention a specific number of recitations.
Wudu is not required for the dua, though being in a state of wudu is virtuous. It should be recited while reflecting on its meaning, with both the sadness of parting and a sense of seeking refuge in Allah for the journey home. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also make this farewell and travel plea through its English meaning.
