Dua Text
Transliteration
La ilaha illallahu wa la na’budu illa iyyahu mukhlisina lahud-dina wa law karihal-kafirun.
Meaning
There is no god but Allah. We worship Him alone, making our religion sincerely His; even if the disbelievers dislike it.
What Is Asked in This Dua
This dua is a declaration of tawhid made before starting tawaf. The servant says that there is no god but Allah. Then he declares that he will worship Allah alone, making his religion sincerely His, that is, purifying his worship of all showing off and of any partner.
At the end of the dua the servant says that he will not abandon this declaration even if the disbelievers dislike it; he expresses that he will remain upon tawhid whatever the attitude of those who deny. Saying these words facing the Black Stone, at the starting point of tawaf, is to proclaim that circling the Kaaba is worship not of the stone but of Allah, who placed the stone there. In this way, tawaf begins with an awareness of tawhid.
When and How to Recite
This dua is recited before starting tawaf, facing the Black Stone. The source book recommends reciting it at least three times, wiping the hands over the face and then beginning tawaf. Tawaf is performed from left to right.
Since tawaf is performed with wudu, the dua is also recited with wudu. It is preferable to recite it while reflecting on its meaning, affirming inwardly that worship belongs to Allah alone. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also make the dua with its meaning in their own language.
Virtue
