Explanation

This is a dua of gratitude recited after drinking water. It is taken from Surah al-Baqarah.

Dua Text

سُبْحَانَكَ لَا عِلْمَ لَنَا إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَا، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَلِيمُ الْحَكِيمُ

Transliteration

Subhanaka la ‘ilma lana illa ma ‘allamtana, innaka antal-‘Alimul-Hakim.

Meaning

Glory be to You. We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, You are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.

What Is Asked in This Dua

This dua is taken from verse 32 of Surah al-Baqarah; in the Quran, these are words the angels said to Allah. By reciting this verse after drinking water, the servant first glorifies Allah, that is, declares Him free from every imperfection. Then, by saying “we have no knowledge except what You have taught us,” he confesses that Allah is the source of knowledge and affirms that He is the All-Knowing and the All-Wise.

Reciting this verse after something as ordinary as drinking water is a reminder that even the simplest blessing has been brought into being by Allah’s knowledge and wisdom. A person cannot know on his own how water benefits him or how it carries life to the body; he knows only as much as Allah has taught him. In this respect, the dua is an expression of gratitude and humility.

When and How to Recite

It is a dua of gratitude recited after drinking water. The source book does not mention a specific number of recitations.

Since it is short, it can easily be recited after every drink of water. Reciting it from memory does not require wudu; since it is a verse of the Quran, wudu is required to recite it while touching the Mushaf. The essential thing is to recite it while reflecting on its meaning and remembering the Owner of the blessing; those who find the Arabic difficult can also express their gratitude with its meaning in their own language.
