Dua After Eating

Explanation
This is a dua of praise recited after finishing a meal.
Dua Text
اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هٰذَا وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ
Transliteration
Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi at’amani hadha wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah.
Meaning
All praise is due to Allah, who fed me this and provided it for me without any might or power on my part.
What Is Asked in This Dua
In this dua recited after finishing a meal, the servant makes no request at all; he only praises. He thanks Allah, who fed him the food and gave it to him as provision. The striking phrase is “without any might or power on my part”: the servant confesses that it was not his own effort or strength that brought the food to the table, and that provision is a gift from Allah.
This confession breaks the heedlessness that a full stomach can bring. Even if a person thinks he worked and earned it, it is Allah who gives the health, the appetite and the means to eat. The dua prompts a brief reckoning after the meal: the blessing came from Him, the strength came from Him, and praise belongs to Him. Since the source book recommends washing one’s hands and praising Allah when the meal is finished, this dua is part of the etiquette of leaving the table.
When and How to Recite
It is recited after finishing a meal, before getting up from the table. The source book recommends washing one’s hands and praising Allah when the meal is finished; no specific number of recitations is mentioned.
It can be recited once at the end of every meal, while reflecting on its meaning. Wudu is not required. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also praise Allah with its meaning in their own language; what matters is giving thanks while remembering that it is Allah who gives the food and the strength to eat it.
Virtue
It is recommended to wash one’s hands and praise Allah when the meal is finished.
